Today’s Reading is Matthew 4:1-11.
Jesus and Satan go back and forth throwing Scripture passages at one another. Both of them use the least helpful term in any spiritual conversation: “The Bible says”.
Because once one says that they pretty much want the discussion to be over. Please don’t doubt my point because I’ve got the Word of God on my side. But sure enough another passage will say the exact opposite. Basically you start playing pin-pong with words without going anywhere.
The situation between Jesus and Satan is resolved though by Jesus answering: “Go away, Satan!”
The Bible is only the word of God in a sense that it testifies to the Word of God which is the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus is the beginning and the end and has the final say. Scripture can be helpful in keeping conversations going but not shutting them off!
