Financial Peace

Dave Ramsey teaches that incredible things happen when you learn to manage your money:
There are a lot of people who have gotten the crazy idea that rich people are somehow evil or something. But it’s simply not true!
You may have heard the warning in the Bible, but pay close attention to the words of the verse. Does it say that money is the root of all evil?
No! 1 Timothy 6:10 says that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”

Modesty redefined

The author of 1 Timothy loves challenging cultural norms:
– Widows can marry again, against the predominant culture.
– Christians are supposed to drink wine, because it’s good for you.

Holy Relativism

Whenever religions try to establish rules, they somewhat limit the diversity that God created: foods, behaviors, lifestyles.
Today’s reading tries to correct that: “Everything that God has created is good; nothing is to be rejected, but everything is to be received with a prayer of thanks.”

Wishful Thinking

Whoever wrote 1 Timothy 3:1-16 was a dreamer. He (sic!) was dreaming of a church leadership to his (sic!) liking. Probably because none of his phantasies ever came true. Maybe leadership in his (sic!) church looked more like this:

A church leader is full of fault; he a polygamist, a drunkard, lacks self-control, and is chaotic; he rejects strangers at his home; he is unable to teach; he is a drunkard and a violent man, never gentle and peaceful; he does love money; he is not able to manage his own family well and make his children obey him with all respect. He is a man who does not know how to manage his own family and he cannot take care of the church of God! He is not mature in the faith, so that he will swell up with pride and be condemned, as the Devil was. He is a man who is disrespected by the people outside the church, he is disgraced and will fall into the Devil’s trap

I can only imagine what their board meetings must have looked like.

Women’s Lib

Whoever wrote 1 Timothy 2:1-15 didn’t know much about the Bible. Please listen to my sermon Women’s Lib.
